OPINION: I have a a little restrained relationship with my fellow countrymen in Amon Amarth. I own the 5 first albums on vinyl (but haven’t listen to anything they released after that) and I have a reasonable interest in the old Norse religion with Oden, Thor and Freja, but growing up in Sweden and being forced to read about it in school it kind of has a ”cringe stamp” here. So for me with all the Viking stuff going on at stage it gets a bit too much ”dress-up-pretend-school-play” for my taste. But I can see how it works in other countries were it’s more exotic.
Ignoring the most apparent viking stuff, this show is awesome. Great sound and editing. Johan Hegg is a natural born frontman that commands the audience with an iron hand.
What’s called Melodic Death Metal usually don’t speak to be either. Often it gets a bit to much child lullabies of the melodies and most records I have heard have a for me a too clean and sterile production. But again, here is what separates Amon Amarth from the manicured teens playing it today. With Johan and company you can literally feel the dirt under the fingernails … as it should be in my book. I will watch this one again!
