WHEN ENTOMBED WERE IN A TABLOID NEWSPAPER (NOVEMBER 29, 1991) TRANSLATED

Published in the evening tabloid paper iDag on the 29th of November, 1991. iDag existed between 1990-1995. The newspaper was a merger of the evening newspapers Göteborgs-Tidningen and Kvällsposten. The newspaper ceased publication at the turn of the year 1995/96 when GT and Kvällsposten were reborn as independent newspapers once again.

ENTOMBED: DEATH METAL - CAN IT GET MORE BRUTAL THAN THIS?

Forget all other hard rock.
It sounds like Bill Haley compared to the latest phenomenon.
Death Metal.

And the kings of the realm of death are called Entombed and come from Sweden.

A couple of years ago, death metal was something no one cared about.
Then came the explosion.

Today, hard rock's darkest underground movement is well on its way to establishing itself above ground as well. Entombed and American Morbid Angel's tour through Sweden right now is proof as good as anything.

The avalanche has started to roll

Death Metal is big, really big. And yet the avalanche has only just started to roll. It's only in the last six months that a large audience has started to glance towards the shadow kingdom. And so far, death has had to endure the sneers of pundits, the contempt of the radio and managed without any traction in the press.

Tonight, Entombed and Morbid Angel — the kings of death metal — will be on stage at XL in Gothenburg.

And it's going to be nailed. Like everywhere else.

— Death is not a daydream, says Nicke Andersson, drummer in Entombed and the guy behind most of the band's material.

Then you hear the nuances
At first listen, death may sound like an old Saab engine about to cut. But those who can bear it will discover the nuances and connections back after a while. To thrash and speed, to Venom, to punk and to the 70s and Black Sabbath.

Of course, it is the brutality and the violent approach that has got so many people turned on. Death is a mirror of its time. It is not Dire Straits or Bryan Adams that the new generation of true rock fans want.

"Elfving (a famous Swedish radiohost at the time) would have a heart attack"

It is death — which is nothing more than a kick in the groin by a steel ex on SAF radio and MTV.

— But we don't want to be on the radio, Nicke grins. It's not possible. Ulf Elfving would have a heart attack and the afternoon would be ruined for a million Swedes.

And Entombed will still reach out.

— Our music is so black, so aggressive and gloomy that it makes you happy. We go all out, giving the same kick that good rock music always does.

Entombed has tuned the guitars down four semitones to create the right, pitch-black atmosphere.

— Since we started, we've all been doing it.

Corroding the vocal cords
And singer Johnny Dordevic does what singers in all death bands do. Presses his chin down to his chest, pushes out the words, strains his vocal cords so they almost corrode and sounds like he has a bad stomach.

— It's not exactly singing, Nicke admits. More like a scream from the other side…

The death lyrics aren't exactly cheerful either. It's horror and death, splatter effects and rebellion.

— Social criticism? I don't know, says Nicke. More like criticism of the whole thing. How can anyone live at all…

“99 percent are zombies”

— 99 percent of all people walk around like zombies, aligning themselves in line. Getting up, working and going to bed. A real square.

In addition to Nicke and Johnny, Entombed consists of bassist Lars Rosenberg and guitarists Alex Hellid and Uffe Cederlund. The band’s debut album “Left Hand Path” has sold almost 150,000 copies worldwide. The new album, “Clandestine”, has been out for a few weeks and has been met with praise everywhere.

Europe is screaming for them. The USA is doing it even louder — even though it’s only been a couple of weeks since Entombed came home to Stockholm after 40 gigs there.

Soon to be the biggest?

Today, Entombed is counted among the big four. But no one believes anything other than that Morbid Angel, Carcass and Napalm Death will soon be swept away and forced to leave Entombed alone on the throne.

— In a month, when "Clandestine" has taken hold everywhere, we won't have to cower for anyone.
