Jag Panzer were formed in 1981 in Colorado by Harry Conklin, Mark Briody, John Tetley, and Rick Hilyard. They were originally called Tyrant, but when California based record labels became interested, they realized that there already was a band called Tyrant in California. Seeking inspiration from a book of World War II German armour in the library, they decided to rename themselves after a slightly easier-to-pronounce version of the "Jagdpanzer" (Jagd = hunt) tank.
OPINION: Another band that deserved a better fate in the 80’s. First with the self-titled EP in 1983 and then we got this their debut album ”Ample Destruction” from 1984 that’s simply fantastic. In my universe it’s American bands like Jag Panzer, Riot, Manilla Road that deserved the spotlight instead of all the Twisted Sisters, Poison, Warrant etc. etc. But as we all know, quality is not the same as appealing to the masses! What a shame! If you’re new to the band and love traditional 1980’s Metal, check this out at once!
