Pile of Skulls is the seventh studio album by Running Wild. Recorded and mixed at Studio M between June-August 1992 and released later the same year. Music and lyrics written by Rolf Kasparek, except "Pile of Skulls" by Kasparek and Axel Morgan and "Win or Be Drowned" by Kasparek and Piotr Smuszynski. It is their last album with guitarist Axel Morgan.
In a 2013 interview, Rolf Kasparek spoke about the song "Bloody Island" from the 2013 album Resilient and explained that the demo version of the song would've been a great fit on this album. The song "Jennings' Revenge" tells about the exploits of pirate Henry Jennings. The lyrics of "Treasure Island" are based on the book of the same title by 19th century author Robert Louis Stevenson.
Pile of Skulls was met with mostly positive reviews from critics. The combined the group's trademark pirate subject matter with a unifying concept about corruption and abuse of power throughout history as one critic said. German metal magazine gave Rock Hard gave it a 9/10.

OPINION: Running Wild is one of these bands that I think deserved a higher place in the spotlight in the 80s. They should have shared the same stages as Accept or Judas Priest. They where also a band that had really high quality releases all through out the 1990s. Not like a lot of band that tried to either go the Alice in Chains way or started to play some big pants groove metal. Maybe it was the pirate them that sunk them, I remember thinking it was kind of geeky even as a teen, but I don’t now. Anyway, this is highly recommended!
