IRON MAIDEN (OKEJ MAGAZINE #6, 1982) TRANSLATED

English translation from the Swedish Pop Magazine OKEJ. OKEJ was more or less the only music magazine in Sweden during the 1980’s and almost 90% of Swedish youth read it and then talked about in school. Are you interested in the OKEJ magazine phenomena, read more here!

Also note that in the original article they spell Bruce Dickinsons name, Bruce Dikkenson several times 😛

THE HEAVY METAL BAND

IRON MAIDEN

GIVES IT ALL

The box is three meters long and one meter wide. It is one of Iron Maiden's most important tour luggage. This giant box is dragged onto the stage by three roadies. They leave it on the right side of the stage next to the curtain, the same curtain that later lets Steve, Clive, Dave, Adrian and Bruce onto the stage.

The mysterious box, with the number 666 e, contains something special! Carefully wrapped in blankets lies the new "horror Eddie" in all its glory. A skeletal "corpse" with large hands and dressed in old, worn-out, torn clothes.

Horror Eddie is usually brought to life at the end of the show and together with two little red devils he usually excites the audience to the max. This new three-meter super-Eddie shocks those present when he walks through the red, licking flames of purgatory. Slowly and clumsily he makes his way across the stage and stretches his long arms from behind over Steve, Adrian and Bruce, who continue to play without any difficulty.

Before the song "The Number of the Beast" a dull ghostly voice is heard quoting proverbs from the Old Testament. Proverbs that are otherwise mostly silenced because they are too colorfully about Satan and his ilk. But Steve and the other iron maidens are not deterred: The devils calmly continue dancing.

The new singer Bruce Dickinson is a veritable hit, whose voice makes you completely forget their former singer Paul Di'Anno after a few minutes. The mood and spirit within Iron Maiden are back to peak, as is their sound. The agenda used to include disputes and brawls with Paul Di'Anno.

Bruce Dickenson, the new singer, comes from Sheffield in northern England. His parents have a farm there and own a famous riding school. Bruce's sister is a successful competition rider.

The concert that Iron Maiden gave in Bruce Dickinson's hometown of Sheffield was one of Bruce's most important. The entire Dickenson family, parents, aunts, uncles and other relatives, had gathered on the two rows of benches closest to the stage. His girlfriend Jane was also there. They live together in a nice apartment located in the west of London, right on the Thames.

So in front of all the relatives who had gathered in Sheffield City Hall to see and hear him, he passed his ordeal with flying colors.

Bruce had already been given the "passed with praise" rating by the fans...

The new Iron Maiden show is among the best that the Heavy Metal scene has to offer right now. Everything is right -- the sound, the songs and the horror effects. Then it is not difficult to understand that in England people consider Iron Maiden to be in the same unique class as Michael Schenker, Ritchie Blackmore and Van Halen.

The man behind the macabre elements is bassist and band founder Steve Harris. He has been a fan of horror stories for many years and he also studies books on black magic with great interest.

The result of the horror-inspired thought process his brain has concocted can be seen during the stage show. The Iron Maidens let the devil dance on...
