Alice Cooper on the front cover of Australia’s first magazine for the gay community, 'William & John', which was launched in January 1972. Despite their self-censorship, the publishers were summoned to court on a total of 64 obscenity charges, relating to printing and publishing ‘indecent’ material. Facing a costly obscenity trial, and despite a vigorous campaign for support, the magazine closed after just eight issues in 1973.
