HAWKWIND (WITH LEMMY ON SONG & BASS) ”THE WATCHER” [LIVE CLIP]

Lemmy: Silver Machine’, was our only hit – and a No. 2 at that! My vocals wound up on the recording, even though Bob sang it at the show. Bob wasn’t on that night and he sounded horrible, so everybody tried overdubbing it later and I was the only one who sang it right.

That was really my only time singing lead, except for ‘The Watcher’ on Doremi Fasol Latido, ‘Lost Johnny’ on Hall of the Mountain Grill, and ‘Motorhead’, which was a B-side for the single ‘Kings of Speed’ and later appeared on the re-release of Warrior on the Edge of Time. But I did sing a lot of back-ups.

From 'Moog Bass’, the YouTube uploader: I have created this video from available video footage and photos of Hawkwind paired with remastered audio of the Cleveland 1974 gig. I have boosted the bass frequencies to the benefit of the drums and the bass to give the audio a better balance.

The instrumentation is sparse throughout, this song absolutely relies on Lemmy and Simon King. The rest of the band add beautiful accents but the rhythm section drive this one.

This is to my mind the definitive Hawkwind version of The Watcher. Lemmy nails this performance with excellent bass and vocals. Motörhead made a great attempt at the song on the ‘what’s Words Worth’ release. Interestingly also live at the Roundhouse.
