"We bought the pig heads, put them on stage and that caused a couple of weird looks," says the book author Alsleben on Deutschlandfunk. “But when singer Dead started slitting his forearm with a knife, people thought: 'Oh, something is going on here that I don't understand. Does it have to be that way?'"
The band cultivated its provocative image as the "baddest band in the world", but privately acted very differently, according to Alsleben.
“The head of the band, Euronymous, liked to provoke with the music. Otherwise, he was a very nice guy, a nice and thoughtful person."
