Derek Riggs was inspired to create "Eddie the Head," the Iron Maiden mascot, when he saw a photograph of the severed head of a Japanese soldier impaled in a tank I found in LIFE magazine. "That dry wrinkled skin caught my eye" comments in the book: Eddie Made Me Do It (The Beast Surge, 1973-1983).
