EDGE OF SANITY (METAL ZONE #9, 1995) TRANSLATED

Metal Zone was a Swedish metal magazine that started around late 93/early 94. Not sure how long it lasted but at least a couple of years. Here’s an article/interview translated from Swedish to English.

Edge Of Sanity: Punctual on the verge of a nervous breakdown

Punctual like clockwork, the Swedish death metal band Edge Of Sanity spits out records. The previous record came out a year ago, and now the fourth full-length, “Purgatory Afterglow,” is here. Music production seems to be in full swing in Finspång.

I would like to release an album once a year; I don’t actually know why we’re so productive. We’ve chosen to work in a different way. After “Unorthodox,” which came out in 1992, we felt that we had come as far as we wanted with death metal, so we decided that Edge Of Sanity would be more of a project. We wouldn’t rehearse, wouldn’t play live, but would just make records. Then you don’t need more than a year in between, explains Dan Swanö, singer and frontman.

However, Edge Of Sanity is not his main thing, as many might think, but the Unisound studio and the future in the production profession.

— It’s an income for the whole family. I probably work 25 days a month, and then it's hard to get everything done with a band. If I have to choose between making money in the studio or losing money playing in a crappy little place, the choice is easy. I'd rather reach people with records, that's more my thing. The record should be able to replace everything, it shouldn't be as perfect live.

In Unisound, Dan mostly records records with "Death Metal and other scary stuff", there have been almost 50, but he also works with other music. Right now his favorites are Ghostorm from Lithuania, with whom he just recorded an album.

— The music really takes your breath away. They can really play, and practice like idiots. Bands from those countries usually do that, unlike many Swedes.

Other bands are usually asked if they're going to tour, but it's no idea to ask Edge Of Sanity.

— Absolutely not! laughs Dan.

There will be a video for the song “Black Tears”, however, and in early 1995 Dan will record a solo album under the name Nightingale. The title will be “I”, but how the music will sound is uncertain.

— I will continue from the song “Sacrified” from the last album. I can do as I please, but will probably realize that it is not so easy to be alone.

Dan is not alone at home anyway, as he has both a girlfriend and a son who is just over a year old.

— He is fascinated by music, strums the guitar and plays drums on everything. “Black Tears” is his favorite song, then he shines like the sun and goes around. When he was still in the womb I played a lot of distorted guitar at home, so if you want him to fall asleep, you just have to play that. Deicide is like a lullaby for him.
