Here are some rare promo photos featuring Finnish black metal band Horna, circa 1995 - 1997. Undeniably one of the foundational Finnish black metal bands of the late 90s and 00s, Horna needs little introduction or explanation. While their middle era albums such as “Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne” (2005) and Ääniä yössä (2006) are often rightfully praised, I recommend checking out their early output as well, especially their debut album “Kohti yhdeksän nousua” (1998). Along with my normal captions, I’m going to start including some Interview snippets from my collection of 90s black metal zines, whenever applicable.
Interview snippet from Warthog Zine (NOR) issue 3 (1998):
“Q: You say your band is infact the opposite of original. Are you calling Legion Horna a trendy band, which infact plays just what the scene would like to hear, this to gain success?!?
A: No, no, no. We're absolutely NOT a trendy band, isn't the trend today more like synth & "Europe" melodies? What I meant with that statement was that we have never tried to develop anything "new", but more like build up a strong feeling that true Black Metal is not dead. When I look upon the reviews we’ve got, the trendpeople seem to avoid us like the plague. All praises are from the true underground more or less. I think that the kind of metal we are performing will never attract the masses. The scene wants to hear bands in the vein of Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, it seems. That is the direction we would be in if we wished for success only.”
