On January 19th, 1988, Megadeth released their third studio album, SO FAR, SO GOOD...SO WHAT! After guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Gar Samuelson were fired for "disruptive behavior" at the end of the Peace Sells tour, Dave Mustaine recruited the talents of Jeff Young and Chuck Behler to record the next album and perform on the subsequent tour. SFSGSW broke into the top 30 on the Billboard 200 and was well-received by rock critics at the time (although more recent reviews have been less favorable). It also sold over 400,000 copies in its first month (Megadeth's fastest selling album at that point), and later received a coveted platinum certification from the RIAA. Despite the band's inner turmoil and rampant drug/alcohol use at the time, SFSGSW succeeded in bringing Megadeth out of obscurity and into the heavy metal mainstream.
